ABOUT JOSEPH PILATES
Born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880, Joseph Pilates was a sickly child. He studied yoga, martial arts, boxing and gymnastics to build strength and health.
Pilates developed his own methods while interred in England during World War I, later training British detectives, the Hamburg police and the German army. In the 1920's, Pilates and his wife Clara set up the first Pilates studios in New York.
During the 1920's, '30s and '40s, the New York dance community embraced the Pilates method, with George Ballanchine and Martha Graham sending dancers to his gym for injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Today, Pilates' work continues to make a revolutionary impact on the world of exercise, offering a positive mind-body solution for those seeking a different kind of fitness.
